Originally from China, Shodo was adopted by the Japanese and made into one of the more popular traditional forms of art. The Japanese writing system has 3 different sets of characters, hiragana and kataka were invented in Japan, while kanji came from china and is the most complicated and artistic of the three. Many kanji share the same pronunciation but each one has it's own meaning. Japanese names are chosen according to those meanings.
